How We Use BOTOX in Birmingham

While injections of botulinum toxin can address conditions like chronic migraines, overactive bladder, and hyperhidrosis, we use it to treat two common concerns at our Birmingham dental office:

TMJ Disorder

If you have a temporomandibular joint disorder, you may experience symptoms like pain, tension, stiffness, and worn teeth. BOTOX is a safe and effective treatment that can be injected into your jaw muscles to relax them and alleviate your symptoms. To manage your TMJ disorder, you’ll have to receive BOTOX about every three to four months.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA-approved to treat facial wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and around the mouth. BOTOX relaxes the muscles, smoothing the skin. It can both minimize the appearance of wrinkles and prevent the formation of wrinkles, no plastic surgeon required.

Prep Skin

Dr. Wood will clean the injection sites. She may also apply a numbing cream to minimize any discomfort.

Administering BOTOX typically only takes about 15 minutes, making it a quick stop in your day. There’s no downtime, so you can return to your regularly scheduled activities.

Repeat

BOTOX wears off over time, so repeat treatments are necessary to address TMD and the formation of wrinkles. You may have to return to our Birmingham office every three to four months for repeat sessions.

What are the don’ts after BOTOX?

Avoid touching the treatment site for 24 hours, as this can cause the botulinum toxin to migrate to other areas. You should also avoid lying down for several hours. Put off any strenuous activity, exposure to the sun, and alcohol use for 24 hours.

How old must I be to qualify for BOTOX?

Patients must be at least 18 years old before they receive BOTOX. However, if you’re under 18 and have a TMD, you can receive treatment with your parent’s consent. To treat wrinkles, we recommend waiting until your mid- to late 20s, when wrinkles start to develop.
